Chapter Four: The Five Dimensions of an Innovative and Performance Culture

Challenge: How to develop a continuous capacity for innovation inside the organization, that is, a continuous capacity for generation, acceptance and implementation of creative ideas?

Solution: The fourth chapter develops a mental model of innovation by exploring when the mind is in the best position to generate, accept and implement creative ideas. To be innovative the mind must be engaged, growing, secure, collaborative and committed. When these elements are in line, innovation and performance will flourish. There are five dimensions or conditions of an innovation culture. All the conditions must be present for organization-wide creative thinking and innovation The innovation process is a people process.

Managers at all levels of the organization must successfully fulfill the following five leadership responsibilities in order to create the conditions of a thriving innovation culture.

1. Engage employees in the enterprise and create clear expectations for active involvement in the innovation process.

2. Expect and help employees to continually grow their knowledge and skill bases.

3. Create a secure environment for expression and acceptance of creative ideas

4. Encourage collaborative development of raw, creative ideas.

5. Tap employees’ commitment for successful implementation of the developed ideas.

Madan has taken a difficult, but strategically critical subject—building and sustaining a performance and innovation culture—to an eminently practical level that most companies can achieve, if they have the will.
